Hello,

I just had my kitchen floor, 4 x 5m, tiled. The floor was screeded in advance. There in a water based heating system underneath. The tiles, which we supplied were 60 x 90cm. We also supplied the grout. I live in London. The work was done in one day by two guys and I can not see anything wrong with the work. I've no complaints in that area. The cost though, was alarming.
Is there a guide to what I should be paying per square meter?
Thanks,
Dermot

Reminds me of my mate helping a plumber swap boiler and fit a new electric shower.
Customer asked him would the work be finished by the weekend. My mate replied it will be finished around 1pm today. Job took 4 hours for £6500.
There is a big thing now to price for job not by hour or day. Maybe you got caught with this. Always get a couple of quotes, but sometimes you want the best people doing it and have to pay what they ask.
Did you get more than one quote?

Oh. Sometimes per meter price don't work.
Can do it the area is large but small area it's not going to add up to cover cost

Did you agree to the price beforehand?

If they messed up and took 2 weeks would you pay more?

If you agreed the price and they've done the job quickly and to a high standard then why are you moaning?

If you didn't agree the price up front then you'll know better next time but you still have a good job that was done quickly. There are plentt of horrer stories on here from peeps who haven't had your experience

There are guideline unit prices for pretty much any work going, but at the end of the day it's what you and the guys quoting agree that matters

The reason for asking is because I have more tiling I need doing. The same tiler did our ensuite and we had leaks in the room below. I don't know how well he tanked out the shower area, I wasn't standing over them while they worked.
To his credit he replaced 3 tiles after the plumber called him and told he that it could not be a plumbing issue. The silicon was on me to do and I replaced the lot with Dow 785.
The next job is similar to our ensuite, an underfloor mat, tiled shower and trap and floor tiles in the rest of the room.
I wanted some idea of what I should be paying because yes, I need to get another quote. I've lost some confidence in this guy and I don't want a leak down onto my new kichen.

Every job is different and costs can vary massively.
I used to undercut builders operating in posh parts of London and charge more than double what I would charge down my neck of the woods.
Also, I would get a feeling of how much of a pain a customer would be and charge accordingly.
Sometimes I tried to price myself out of jobs but my reputation made it almost impossible.
Worst one was when I quoted 18k for a custom built 4m fitted wardrobe over a bed.
(Sorry George, if you're reading this I didn't mean to rip you off, but you kept on saying that you'd seen my work and didn't care about money and I didn't want the job at the time.)
