Could anyone tell me what type of spring I need to close this type of gate?

Hi guys, has anyone ever fitted the spring to one of these? Many thanks, Steve.

Lots of closers for timber could work but you would need to fix timber baton to gate in order to use .
Simple method would be a length of nylon rope attached to a weight , adding a pulley would make for a smoother action .

I doubt it will close properly given it is metal on metal on the hinge and the latch. If you need too keep it properly shut consider replacing with a wooden gate and auto shutting latch

You need a weld-on spring, then weld it on (take it to a fabricator if you have to) Never mind this non-sense about metal on metal blah blah.

This is galvanised. Grind off the zinc from the applicable edges before welding. Then cold galv afterwards

That’s great, thanks very much for the help ✔️

The above mention spring, should work just fine, but no need to mess about with welding and fabricators - you could fix it to the gate by either drilling and tapping, or simply drilling and using nuts and bolts. It needs to be fitted between the two hinge hangers.

This one...

Once fitted, you wind the spring up, with a couple of pegs, until you get the required tension.

Trust I would fit here to here?

My first thought was - it would fit in the gap between the two gates, in line with the hinge points, but if not, with a little metal-working ability, you could fix it via two brackets, slightly inboard. It's a matter of buying one, then seeing what will work.

Why/how would the OP weld, when by simply drilling fixing holes he could simply bolt it in place? Even if the unit cannot be directly bolted into place, it certainly could be by making up some clamp on brackets.
