Could it be salts?

Also - do you think a dehumidifier will slow the damp or quicken it?

Also - when the wall went damp originally it was the whole wall - not just the chimney breast - and it was black and wet. Hence why we fixed the pointing. Now it's just the chimney......

you're looking for damp brickwork or signs of water trickling down. You can use a dehumififier but it will have little effect if the water is mostly not on the surface but deep in the bricks.

Wet chimneys make brown or yellow marks as the tar soaks through mixed with the water. You may smell smoke or tar. Do not drape wet washing around as that would cause condensation on the cold wall.

A 9" brick wall takes the best part of a year to dry out once you stop wetting it.

Interesting . So if we re pointed in August - it's possible the bricks are drying out still? Would the pointing impact the chimney itself?

Its almost irrelevant where the stains are on the chimney breast.

1. Does the chimney breast come up from the room(s) below, and are there any other fire openings or vents in it?

2. Typically damp could still be penetrating thro the brickwork of the exposed gable. Presumably its a solid wall?
2A. or forming inside the flue(s) from lack of adequate thro ventilation, & unswept flues.
2B. or penetrating from the chimney stack on the roof.

3. The metal vent is for external use - plastic hit-and-miss vents are used internally in c/breasts.

4. There's no signs of mould so there's no health issues but its best to get any "damp signs" cleared up.

5. If the flue(s) need sweeping you will have to open up the blocked fireplace - unless a sweep will have a go in the opening behind the metal vent?

6. What do you mean by "last winter ... the wall getting very wet"?

7. Why not go outside, and pic the gable from the front of the house and the rear - & post the pics on here?

When replying, merely refer to the item number.

Afraid I don't know all the terminology - what's a gable?

For 2. Yes is a solid wall

6 yes this is when we had a penetrating damp issue

Out of interest - if one of the fire places was reopened and back in use - would this resolve all issues since presumably they re itself is what traditionally stopped this damp occurring? ( or am I being v naive?)

Also -
Of interest - there is no damp on any of the other 5 chimney breasts in the house, just this one on the top floor. If this is useful info

I've just seen some of the other later posts - i apologise for repetitions.

Lotte,
It would help if you could keep all your replies to individual posters in one "reply post" - eg the 5 posts immediately above.

6. Before answering any more of your Q's with incomplete information could you post the requested pics please?

Ok will do. Apologies - what specifically is the gable?
