Council owned energy companies

Sadly, that about sums it up. We've sold our family silver and wonder why we pay a fortune to use our own plates and cutlery that now belong to foreign investors.

Don't forget to tell Sid!

No items with a precious metals content were actually realised in exchange for payment of money.
No one actually paid a fortune (however this may be quantified) - even if this may be implied in this post.
The ownership of crockery, etc by foreign nationals is merely figurative and the suggestion that they now posess eating utensils once owned by ourselves is for illustrative purposes only.
Sid is not a real person. He was an imaginary person, used in tv adverts as a memorable catchphrase. He has no actual connection to British Gas, Centrica, The Gas Board or effing Tom Cobley and all.

Many council's have businesses designed to generate additional income, many are loan sharks to other council's and business also.

The idea is to create additional income for the council whether this trickles down to the community is another matter... I personally believe it just tops up the coffers of the councillors...

I get that, and some councils are very good at it. Greater Manchester Council have always run Manchester Airport, when there was a change in the local govt structure Manchester Council set up a holding company to own the airport with other local councils as shareholders and the same council staff running the airport, they were so good at it, they bought more airports, Humberside, East Midlands and Bournemouth, MAG might be the largest airport group in the UK, either way, they're very good at airports.

At the other end of the scale you Have Cornwall Council. Newquay Airport has always been run by the RAF with private companies doing the passenger side. When the RAF decided to withdraw, it was decided to hand control over to Cornwall Council. On the day of the handover, flights stopped and the airport closed for a month, apparently nobody told the council they had to have an 'air traffic controller'.
