I'm in the middle of renovating my living room and I'm trying to sort out the fireplace just now.
The house is an old granite miners cottage
The sides of the fire are red brick so I've got no issues here but the back is granite. Its the gable end that the fireplace is on also. I'm looking at using thin bricks in order to get the aesthetic look that I'm going for so I need a flat surface to cement on these.
My issues is, how do I smooth the granite back? I understand that granite is relatively porous and needs to breathe because of this. I don't want to just concrete the back of the fireplace to find out further down the line that this is causing dampness.
