We asked a well established local P&D to quote us a price on re-decorating our dining room, to include removal of the cheap & nasty polystyrene coving that has been up since we moved in, and to replace it with the neater plaster type. The room is Square with no alcoves or chimney breasts to navigate etc etc. But he told the wife when he came to have a look, that its such a nightmare doing coving that they would rather not do it these days.
I am by NO MEANS any good at decorating but I imagined any P&D worth his salt would fit coving without too much hassle.
The P&D is a local family firm who have been around for years and have good references, so it suprises me some what. What do you chaps reckon ?

If he is not happy doing it fair enough, much better he is honest unlike the jack of all trades that has a stab at anything.

There were jobs I hated and that is the good thing about being self employed if somebody wants flock wallpaper hung or the outside of their house painted and you don't like ladders you can just say no.

It's a job that crosses over from decorating to plastering while I did do coving I never liked it, just try climbing a pair of steps holding a three or four metre length of plaster coving that is buttered with adhesive it's quite heavy and unweildy and can snap under it's own weight! I used to get some help for a few hours to get the large bits up.

Nothing worse than the bloke who promises anything and then lets you down or makes a pigs ear of it. You certainly wouldn't be impressed if you talked me into skiming a plaster wall ;)

Typically it's a plasterer's job.

I daresay he can recommend someone who can fit coving.

Fair play to the dec, i agree with the other comments, get the right trade for the right job to ensure you get a good standard of work. It is a bit of a cross trade thing but don't knock the guy for being honest
