COVING

Hi - i'm just about to cove my lounge. I've removed the old (polystyrene coving) and cleaned the walls and ceiling so that they are smooth.

Now I need some top advice on the best method of attaching my plaster coving to walls and ceiling?

1) Best method for joining lengths (I have 1 5 metre long room and coving that is 2.4metres) - mitre or butt? - and how do I best conceal the joints?
2) Best adhesive for sticking them to the wall / ceiling - and what is the best method for keeping them in place whilst the adhesive dries?
3) Whats the best filler to use (for any gaps) and whats the best method for filling corner joints to hide any gaps?
4) Any other useful tips and advice...

On long runs, temorary nails along the line that you draw will help to keep it level... The right adhesive will mean you wont have to nail into cove...Tho sometimes a temporary nail into cove is ok..

may be too late but |I would have found a supplier with longer lengths to minimise joints.

Having watched a pro do a room a few years ago I follow this method now:
1. Mark the wall the right distance down at each corner;
2. Using a line put nails in between these at approx 1 meter intervals - more frequent where there will be a straight joint.
3. Corners are mitred (using the metal triangular tool) running joins are straight cuts.
4. Score wall and ceiling to key;
5: Prime with thinned PVA;
6. Use proper adhesive and take the nails out as you fill using the adhesive.
7. 90% of getting the joint right is the bottom edge - the nails help here and if that is right you just have to ensure the top corner is flush. Straight joins I initially fill with adhesive and finish with polyfilla and a piece of fine sandpaper round a piece of 1 1/2 drain to smooth it. I have some joins I cannot see and I know where they are!
8 - Very important - DO NOT leave the short piece between two internal corners til last - it won't go in!
