Is it plaster board or lathe and plaster?
Is the landing a half landing or full?
It’s likely to be plasterboard and just a crack in the skim.
If you have a half landing, where there is a:90° turn, it’s possible that someone misses the short steps and jumps onto the area for fun. This could cause cracks.
Rake out the crack and fill, keep an eye on it.
