Hello,

I have recently patched up and painted a room only to find several foot long cracks which start from the window corners have reappeared just 2 days later. I removed about 1 cm thickness of plaster before re-plastering the cracked areas before painting.

My question is do i need this wall professionally replastered to avoid the cracks coming back? Im thinking that there must be movement int he walls for the cracks to re-appear so quickly so will plastering even fix the issue?

Many thanks

Any internal/external cracks to the brick/block/stone work visible?
How long were the cracks there prior to your repair?
Did you rack the plaster right back to brick/block etc..?
If nothing sinister, I would rack the plaster back to brick giving a good 50/60 mm opening, have a look for any internal cracks while you at it.
Then basecoat, apply a reinforced mess/tape then skim it(x2)

Thanks,

I didnt go down far enough to see the internal brickwork but there is nothing visbile on the outside walls. we have just bought the house - its early 1970's and Id say the cracks have been there for some time.

Think the answer it to rack it out right down to the brickwork as suggested..

Have you got any pictures to upload of the cracks, there was trend when window boards were fitted to drive a spike in the brick work as a fixing point, you often find the plaster cracks near this spikes.
I guess it's down to the wood expanding and contracting. I try to get rid of them.
