Creating A New Ceiling - Supporting Joists

Could someone outline the most common methods of supporting joists for a new ceiling (only - i.e. not a floor above as well) between two solid walls. How do you secure the joists at either end to the walls?

Would securing joist hangers into the walls be the most common method? Or are there quicker and easier ways?
