Can crimps be used in a similar way to where a junction boxe would be used.

eg taking a radial off a ring when there is no suitable socket outlet close enough, by using yellow crimps?

No, they are only designed to take one wire in each side, suggest you put your new accesory on the ring and use crimps to extend cables of insufficent length, trying to keep the number of joins as low as possible, make sure you enclose your crimps in a suitable enclosure

i have taken a spur this way many times. just make sure the end with 1 wire is doubled over to give good contact
