My local building merchants use crusher run instead of Type 1 MOT

Is crusher run suitable for long term longevity for patio sub base or should I use MOT?

It is the same, just another name for MOT, so will be suitable, if it's 40mm down to dust.

Crusher Run and Type 1 are not the same thing. MOT Type 1 is produced to a specification (SHW803) that ensures the product is resistant to frost amongst other things. Crusher Run is not produced to such a standard and thus is an inferior product. Crusher Run will often contain recycled materials such as concrete and brick rather than being a quarried hardstone.

Better tell the builders merchants.

Is "crusher run" a regional name for scalpings? ie the chips that don't quite make the grade for MOT?

If so, perfectly fine for patios and for drives too.

Ground workers supplied crusher run and was full of glass and tarmac. Also had plastic toys and wood. It took me 3 days to sort through throwing the rubbish in a skip then getting 4 ton of decent type 1 dropped off and dig in.
It terrible stuff. Avoid.
Building waste crushed up. Supposedly to be half decent stuff but a lottery what you get

As above, be careful what you are buying as 'Crusher run', some is recycled material, 'sorted' to a degree then put through a crusher.

I worked at a Recycling plant some years ago. The initial material we had to crush was all concrete and brick, and a fair amount went for car park sub base at my local Asda. Once we'd got through that though, the quality of material coming out from the sorting line was to be frank, bloody awful. Trommels only sort by size, so with the lumps of brick and concrete, we were getting lumps of clay too, the Manager wanted it all through the crusher, (which was a nightmare in itself), as he thought he could sell it rather than have to pay to get rid of it. (He soon found out no-one would buy it.)

I bought 8 tons of recycled crush aggregate. It was OK. Pulled a few fragments of wood and plastic out as I went, ended up with about half a bucketful so not terrible, sure it wouldn't have been an issue if I hadn't bothered pulling it out. No tarmac, no glass. Mostly concrete, a few bits of brick.

It cost a lot less than MOT. It will be under concrete so frost protection doesn't matter. It compacted very nicely, had a good amount of dust in it.

From a decent supplier it can be useful stuff. Good for the planet and your wallet.

Crusher run just means it's gone through a crusher and hasn't been sifted. It doesn't state whether it is or isn't recycled, it could be either.

I’ll stick with MOT type 1… considering the whole job is costing me 1k I’d rather pay £40 more knowing that the base once done is done for good
