Curtains or Blinds?

The curtains in my home are looking a tad on the shabby side (and that's being kind...).

But I don't know whether to replace them with more curtains or blinds.

Would blinds make my home more 'sellable' in the future?

But do slatted blinds offer complete privacy? I've been sat in friends homes who have horizontal slatted blinds and it always feels as if people can see in...

I'm thinking of going for something like this in my bathroom http://www.creativelydifferentblinds.com/SunsetsandSkies/Cirrus2.aspx; are roller blinds suitable for a bathroom?

But I just don't know for anywhere else! Personally I think I prefer curtains (feels more homely) but I don't want them if it might put off buyers in the future!

Sorry for all the questions. Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

Furniture and fitting do not put off house buyers, you don't go looking for a house will nice curtains, do you?

I guess not.... But if someone's looking for a home that won't entail them making any changes then it might make a difference, will it not?

And then there's the psychological thing of what people see when viewing a house. i.e. your home should be as free of clutter as possible, even though that clutter wouldn't be there if they did buy it and moved in...

In these days of high energy prices I would go for thermal lined curtain, roller blinds or slatted ones for the bathroom.

After gutting my house a few years back I decided to go with vertical blinds to replace the net curtains and curtains. Before the winter came I was putting curtains back up because, even though the house had been fully insulated and had new double glazing, the rooms felt much colder than they did previously. Most people I know have curtains with their blinds, if only for decoration, to give that 'homely' feel you describe.

I've always hated the dust traps that are venetian blinds but they seem to be becoming more popular again now. They are more private than verticals when open, but when closed, both offer equal privacy.

Most roller blinds are suitable for bathrooms but the thinner materials can offer a pretty clear silhouette when the light is on, if you are a little sensitive about revealing your figure. ;)

Lol thanks Mister Helpful; I didn't think about the potential for silhouettes at all! I think the ones I'm interested in come in a 'blackout' style; that shouldn't make a silhouette should it?!

So am I being silly about horizontal blinds not being private? Does it matter which way the blinds are facing?

I've got a white blackout blind in my bathroom and from outside you can hardly tell that the light is on at all. (I really ought to tell my neighbour that she should get one!  )

I find that the venetian blinds offer more privacy when closed if you have the slats tilted so that the uppermost edges are facing inward rather than outward. (Hope that makes sense!) They do then seem as if you can see out a little bit but if they are tilted the other way then people on the outside can see in a little bit. Either way, you can't really see much when fully closed.

We have newspaper sellotaped onto our windows. Cheap and can be replaced regularly

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely go for blackout roller blinds in the bathroom.

Might get them for the bedroom as well (still worried about the privacy!) if I can find some that look nice enough.

And your poor neighbour - I'd be so embarrassed if that was me!

Believe me, there's no need to feel embarrased for her - she regularly chats over the wall to all the neighbours in her undies!!

Pity she's in her 80's!! :p (OK, that bits a lie, but the rest is true!)

Choose wisely and you'll be fine.

Hey! I agree with you, I think roller blinds are the way to go in a bathroom, I have had one installed in my bathroom for a couple of years now and it's low-maintenance. According to this statement I found after doing some research online: Practical, stylish and available in an array of different styles and finishes, should you require plain, textured or something a little more specialised. A made to measure roller blind is perfect for any room in your home including kitchen and bathroom with our moisture resistant options and also the bedroom with our blackout roller blinds ranges. Blinds come as standard with a bead chain control however choose from other control options as well as personalising your blind with different finishing shapes and braids. Order your bespoke roller blind today for next day delivery, bathroom blinds can also be resistant to humidity!

Venetian, (horizontal), blinds are old fashioned and look cheap and nasty in my opinion. Very 70's style and, as stated elsewhere, dust traps. Even the fancy gadgets to remove the dust are useless.

You can get nice vertical blinds which are also able to drastically silhouettes and if measured and fitted correctly will stop anyone from peering in. On their own they can look cold and uninviting, however, some nice thick thermal curtains to draw at night will keep the cold out, but they should be as long a drop as possible, maybe to skirting board height, or you will get cold air dropping down if they are only past the window ledge.

You will feel the advantage of them now and if you should come to sell in the future they will certainly help to add attraction more than Venetian blinds.
