We've just extended the house, re-wired it, redecorated it etc etc and are now ready to move back

My wife wants vertical blinds in the windows, well some of the windows at least AND curtains too..

Seems a bit excessive if you ask me.

However, for the bay windows, the curtain and blinds will hang from under the bay ceiling.

I assume I need to put a timber batten here, but what size ... somebody said 4 x 1/2 planed timber

Is that right

As far as the normal windows are concerned, do I still need some sort of timber to support the blinds only ?

the curtain track will be fastened to the wall above the window opening ... do these go on timber too ?

Previously they weren't but I remember on several occasions having problems getting good fixings.

My idea is that if there is timber ... ALL future curtain track hanging / changing will be easy.

Any ideas / tips would be appreciated.

thanks ! :)

Must admit curtains/blinds is a difficult trade off: blinds = more light and curtains = more dark. we go for blinds downstairs and curtains up.

i try to avoid using wooden battens as i feel i'm doing the job x2. suggest only using battens if you can't get good fixings direct into the curtain/blind wall attachments. if you need battens then i would use something like 40 x 20 deep.

bay windows are quite tricky and i am 50:50 on blind or curtain. for curtains you can buy a purpose made track runner kit. i aim to attach to the wall or window frame if poss. if fixing to the roof of the bay then you will need to find the joist positions as the ceiling itself is unlikely to be strong enough to support the curtains/blind which tend to be quite heavy for bays.

In terms of tips I try to get 1 fixing in and then use the pole/blind to level and mark off the remaining fixings and then drill/test each 1 at a time to make sure everything’s staying level.
