hi,

I just want to see if anyone can confirm or give me a link which confirms weather there are any official uk cylinder capacity regulation in regards to the property size, i.e can a cylinder installed be deemed too small for a property and therefore would a customer have the right to argue this should never have been fitted.
originally a 230ltr cylinder was installed in a 4 bedroom 3 bathroom detatched property and this was replaced by a 160ltr cylinder.

Im just confused as technically it passed an independant inspection as the system was fine in itself and working it was only mentioned in the report that the cylinder "could" be deemed as insufficient, however never went onto describe it as a remedial repair for the installer.
I just can't find anything to say there is any legistlation on this....i just need to know weather i can persue this for the customer or advise the customer that this is within the installers rights.
there is an obvious debate with regards to the customer having been/not been informed of what was being installed however looking at actual regs would be easier than going down that route for the time being.
any help would be massively appreciated.

I am unaware of any 'official' sizing regulations for HW cylinders.

I would suggest you look HERE for advice 'straight from the horses mouth' so to speak

The figure often given for hot water usage is 35-50l per person per day, I do not think there is any regulation governing this.

If the 160l cylinder had a baffle or diffuser on the cold feed(to prevent stratification breaking down) and a high recovery coil it may well be the equivalent of the 230l cylinder unless of coarse it had those mention too.

No. I think you already knew that.

However, if this is a domestic installation, then consumer legislation requires that products sold are fit for use, and requires that tradespeople use reasonable skill and expertise carrying out work.

If the cylinder was chosen by an installer, and was clearly too piddly for the size of house, then you could consider pursuing the installer for remedy or for financial compensation.

it passed an independant inspection
What exactly does that mean?

Stop going on about regulations.

im going about regulations becos that would make it alot more cut and dry and easier for me to sort out. and no i never knew there was no regs as im not a plumber or engineer of any sort, but did find it hard to find any myself but someone did mention it. so wantedd to clarify on here.

an independant inspection reffers to the fact that because the work was provided under a grant all work had to have an independant inspection after completion to ensure the system was safe and no damage was caused to the property. any remedial work reported in the inspection report has to be completed by the original installation company.

A way to make the cylinder bigger is store more energy. Fit a DHW blending valve on the DHW draw-off pipe and set this to 50C (that is 50C at the taps). Then store the water at 75C, buy turning up the cylinder stat or replacing one which reaches 75C. The boiler will have to be run on maximum temperature. This "extends" the cylinder size.
