I have a 36x18 h.w.cylinder in the loft, it has the blue insulation all over it, and I have boxed it in with plenty of loft insulation round it......is that just about all I can do to reduce heat loss, or will aluminium foil be better still?
Enclosed in a box full of loft insulation, I can't imagine there is much to be gained by adding a radiant barrier. Difficult to quantify though, so you could give it a try if you don't mind spending a couple of quid and messing about up there. You might be better getting a couple of emergency survival blankets, since kitchen style aluminium foil doesn't really make the best radiant barrier.
