Personally, being old I wouldn`t waste money on testing or a rebuild.

Always a good thing, to pull something faulty apart, just to work out the failure mode - it's a great learning experience, and in a few cases it might be cheaply repairable. The invested time, is never wasted.

I assume the round black component is the thermal overload

More likely it's a capacitor, and that is what has failed/is failing.

Thanks. I’ll check the resistance next time it switches off. Do you have any idea what temp these are designed to switch off at if functioning correctly?

I would agree, if you know what you are looking for and have the time and the tools to seperate each chamber of the pump but not to pay somebody and each impellor has to be set up within it`s chamber on reassembly.

The start capacitor, appears to be mounted externally, on the motor casing. That component certainly looks like a capacitor, but why mount it inside the motor, and in series with the mains supply?

I think that’s the thermal overload switch. It sits in a shallow round recess in the motor body to respond to high temp. I’m going to check it next time it fails. I’m now fairly certain the motor is overheating due to friction or wiring issues, or maybe the overload protection switch is faulty.

I think that’s the thermal overload switch.

If it's a capacitor - a meter set to a continuity/ohms range, and connected to that component, will show a low resistance initially, and the resistance will gradually increase if left connected, as it charges up.
