Data Plate Requirements On Appliances

Do household electrical appliances require a data plate?

The reason I ask is I have purchased a cooker hood and it arrived with a european plug on it.
There is no plate anywhere on the hood and the motor also is not marked.

There is no model number, serial number or barcodes on the appliance.

Do I have a case to send this unit back?

If there was a recall on this product how the hell would an affected batch be identified.

buy it off fleebay or the internet?? if it is european plug fitted is it also 110volts? if it is not CE marked I personally wouldn't plug it in or connect it.

Most (possibly all, but I'm not sure) European countries use 230V (or some variation on that, i.e. 220-250), so I suspect the voltage will be correct, however, if it doesn't have any markings, in particular CE, then I wouldn't be happy it's safe.

If you do insist on using it, then if it's metal I'd at least check that there is earth continuity to the casing etc...

well I wouldn't suspect anything on a NON CE marked item! how do you know where it came from?

Not that CE marks mean much, many of the categories for CE marking can be self-certified and there is no registration (unlike with FCC approval in the USA where each product approved has a unique ID). There are plenty of dodgy chineese vendors who will happilly slap CE labels on stuff regulardless of whether it actually complys or not.

I spoke to the company today. Its a UK product and is produced in the UK.

The cooker hood they sent me is a technical prototype and is not production model.
Its not certified for use in someone's house and is not deemed as electrically safe.

They are collecting it on monday and they are going to ship me a new unit out.
