Dead Boiler

Went round to see him only to find he did not live there, I did report to trading standards but did not follow it up.

Sounds like you had fun with your car and I bet it was not a cheap garage, I have worked for main dealers worst of the lot, good size garages who cut every corner in the book all flash gear and snazzy signs, got the sack from that one for refusing to bodge jobs, last place was an "under the arches" garage which was a pokey hole but always did the job right, but they could not afford the flash gear thats now expected and were unable to charge the money so ended up closing down. I work for myself now but getting too old for crawling under cars in the wet and cold.

Could do with a lottery win.

6. Tell them you won't pay for parts swapped out that don't fix the fault.

Hmmmmm well... I've had a couple of not-so-simple faults recently so I'm feeling sensitive!
Cars and boilers alike can have several parts in the same area showing signs of age, especially if thers'a been no servicing for years. And if something leaks or fails as soon as it's touched it isn't the mender's fault.

I remember a neighbour ranting about what he thought was a rip-off quote to mend his brakes. Like a fool I had a look. They were leaky, with discs and drums worn beyond limits and the fluid must have done 100,000 miles. All he wanted to pay for was a set of cheapo pads and shoes.
The fault was "Bad brakes" but there was no single part to fix it.
He paid the man the money, but then moaned at me 3 months later when the master cylinder went.

So, when someone has "poor hot water".....

I agree, when we go to a boiler there is usually more than one faulty item, and some that become faulty because we have to touch them to do our work creating MIF's.

At least the motor mechanic can change a relay!

I bet you get the same as I get with cars but with boilers etc, usual scenario, I gave you my car to fix the brakes now my CD is not working its somthing you have done.

Or my other favourite is I go to fix somthing and its obvious its been "looked at" so I ask what have you done so I can have an idea what to look for. usual answer, nothing I have not touched it. So somehow the wires have connected themselves to the wrong terminals.

Also why is the five minute job the one that takes all day and happens to be the one you gave a fixed price for :?
