Hi,

I've had the following built in preparation for decking. I was thinking about decking the sides as well as the top. Does anyone have any advice/tips on the approach I should take please?

Specifically, how do I go about laying the decking on top? Presumably I need some sort of frame construction.

Thanks in advance

Hi All,

Does anyone have any pointers on the above please? Thanks

you either need a frame that supports the timbers, while not breeching the DPC levels, or you can buy ready made panels of decking that are designed to be laid on concrete.

is there a recommended distance between the timbers to minimize bounce?

Confused - why didn't you sink posts in the ground and attach beams/joists to support your deck? 2 x 5 or 2 x 6 spaced under 1M apart assuming reasonable decking thickness/length, then nog in between and make sure you neighbours aren't affected by the raised area. As it looks like you are over 30cm from ground level.

I wanted the deck to be higher up and close to the level of my bifold door (probably more than 30cm). This meant that we had to build up the substrate a fair amount. I'm detached which means it shouldn't affect the neighbours. I hope this picture is clearer.

I think you are suggesting that I position timber battens on the concrete deck (1 metre apart) and then screw my decking on to these? Would 4x2's be suitable for this?

Regarding the 30cm - I think what Motorbiking was getting at was that raised decking in your garden falls under permitted development providing the deck is no more than 30cm above the ground. Your neighbours may not be too happy with the loss of privacy if it's significantly more.....

Understood.
On the frame I need to build to lay the decking, are 4x2's appropriate and how far apart should they be? Should I also fit noggins in between?

I have never built decking....
You need to work out the height first .

Then work backwards. AFAIK if the support timber sat directly on the concrete you'd get damp so I would be tempted to raise it up on some kind of impermeable support like pads made of tile or the like, with a bit of DPC material on each side for luck.
If you already haven't got a fall on the concrete, build one in by using thicker pads at the house side.
I'd add noggins. Distances would depend on the top timber. You don't want a trampoline
I would source a grill/grate to join the decking to the house and build in the offset.
