Hi all< i want to build a decking roof but I could use some advice-timber, plans.... The size will be 12'x 6' and it should look like the sketch I have attached. Do I have to dig some holes for the posts supporting the roof?

Regards,

DanielR

Sorry, what's posted is a mono pitch roof, set against a wall, so are you asking advise on this or are you contemplating a walk on decking roof over an extension?...pinenot :)

Unfortunately that is the only sketch I have found at that time; the decking will be over a concrete base, at the back of the garden, not over an extension. I don't want a any fancy roof just a basic one. How many posts should I use? Will 4x4" be enough? Should the rafters be at 16 inch centre? I have spent a lot of time looking for some plans but I couldn't find any...

Regards

So this is just a canopy over a decked area?

What do you intend to put on the roof? Tiles? MArvec sheets?

Yes, something like a canopy and I think I will use osb and some blue or green bitumen flashing...

DanielR this has been an interesting post for me as i am looking to do the same thing , mine is approx 4.0m out by 4.5 m wide i have two 4x4 posts that will hold 4x2 cross member and then 4x2 rafters coming from house to front of cross member . i am putting tongue and grove on the 4x2 because you will see underneath and it looks prettier also i am putting tile shingles on top of this for looks again , hope this is of some interest
Howy

Hi Howy, thx for the post, ting and grove is a good ideea, actually it will look a lot better than osb... Is the 4x2 enough for rafters? I was thinking of 6x4 for posts, and 6x2 for rafters but now I think that the 4x4 posts and 4x2 rafters will do the job. Are you going to concrete the posts, or planning on using some brackets to attach them to a concrete footing or base?

Cheers

Hi Daniel, the posts are already in as I had a pergola coming off the house on my deck
they are cemented in with those ready mix bags for posts but I also bolted them to the deck supports. Regarding timber sizes I guess you cant over do it but I disscussed this with my brother in law who is a builder and as he says terrace house wooden floor joists are 4x2 anb look what they support, also I have a 4x2 wallplate bolted to my house for the rafters to rest on, hope thie helps
Howy

Thank you howy1, that makes perfect sense, you are right, all the joists in my loft are 4x2 and same in my living room. I will be using treated 4x2 for rafters and 4x4 posts, tongue and groove boards and something like this
http://www.brico.com/madera/tegola-americana/tegola-americana.html
but blue or green, it will blend better with the surroundings.
This is my garden, a big mess....where the old shed is there is a concrete base where the deck will be, and on the left will be another shed.

I've got "Black & Decker' guide to decking" book but so far for about half of the book the author is talking only about a single tipe of decking, looking forward to read the other half...
Thk for the replay and good luck with your decking.

Hi Daniel, bak again those shingle tiles can you get them in this country or are they imported as I have been looking at various shingles and there quite expensive so I wondered if these would be cheaper.
howy

No worries howy, I hope this shingles are good enough for your project. One last question regarding this type of roof, how are you planning to join the rafters over the posts? I suppose that you are going to install a plate, and the rafters would rest on it, but what joining method should be used?

Cheers,

DanielR
