Hi all,

I have just had a bedroom skimmed - walls and ceiling (artex back to smooth) plus coving. I'm doing the skirting at the weekend. Question is, before I can decorate, what processes do I need to go through to prepare the walls, ceiling and coving?

All advice much appreciated!

Thanks.

You need to put on a mist coat or some recommend two mist coats - that's emulsion thinned with water. The mist coat(s) sink into the new plaster. If you use full-strength it will sit on top and flake off. I'm not a professional but (following advice in this forum) I now always use Dulux Supermatt. It works a treat. The tin will give you full instructions.

As stated apply a mist coat first to all bare plaster. when this is dry any filling that is needed will show up and cn be done. the walls can then be lightly sanded. A second coat can then be applied but only thinned a little, then full coats after that.
If your wood work is to be painted then this should be knotted and primed after the first mist coat and then when dry any gaps filled with decorators caulk. Before the final coat of emulsion paint goes on , apply a coat of undercoat to the woodwork and gloss after the final emulsion coat.
