Hello All.
I was wondering where I can get information on 'Departures' from 7671. I have looked in the 'bible' but cannot find enough info. Just want to know if there are reference numbers for certain fault's. Or do you just note them all down in basic english.
Thanks for your time and help.

a departure is when for some reason you did not follow BS7671.

i'd think what you wan't to record is.

1: what you have done
2: why you did it
3: what regs it breaks
4: why in the circumstances you belive it is safe to break that reg and/or any special precuations you have taken.

e.g. something like

installed non-RCD 16A ceeform outside for vending machine because manufacturer said it was likely to cause trips, breaks reg XXXX, warning notice fitted that socket is for vending machine (which is not easilly portable and has an earthed metal case) only and 16A blue ceeforms not otherwise in use on site.

You wouldn't fit all that in the box, it's tiny! Normally you just note the reg number(s) eg reg xxx - non RCD socket in the garden

... a Pensdown T shirt...

I was taking a picture of a sailing boat rounding Lumps Fort recently, I think there was a T-shirt in the corner of the pic somewhere

The reason i ask is that i am about to test an old installation which i know has some d.i.y additions that are not good, was led to believe that there are diferent 'codes' for different levels of danger.
Thanks in advance.

Blimey, Sparky40. Are you sure you should be inspecting and testing if you haven't even read pages 294 & 295 of BS 7671?

i think you are confusing departures (things done on a new install that aren't compliant with 7671 but where safety is maintained in other ways) with faults on a pir.

on a PIR there are 4 fault codes,
1: requires urgent attention
2: requires improvement
3: requires further investigation (e.g. you find a cable but you haven't managed to figure out where it goes)
4: noncompliance with BS7671 (for those things that aren't dangerous but aren't compliant either).

there is a lot of dispute over what codes to use for what faults and in many cases it will depend on the installation and its users (e.g. old unshuttered sockets would be a very bad thing in a house with babies but present little danger to older kids and adults).
