Hi

Currently carrying out significant renovation of the hall; new stair spindles, sinking pipes and new coving etc.

Having removed the oh so attractive 1960's staircase cladding and had the new spindles and hand rail fitted. Had to renew the studding under the stairs, re-boarded at the weekend and now it will need skimming along with the other general patching.

My problem is where the bottom rail of the spindles attaches to the staircase; the lip is only 1-2mm after the plasterboard is fitted. Will this be enough for a plasterer to be able to skim?

Regards

1mm is getting a bit marginal but he should be able to feather out to that as long as it’s not significantly less; what thickness boards are you using?

Thanks for the replies, collegue has just suggested that a thicker PVA coat will be required as well. 12 mm board on 230mm centres, max height 1.2m.

Why did he suggest that? On the contrary, it’s not normal to PVA over PB before skimming. It won’t hurt but will have no beneficial effect other than to slow down the setting time a little, although this can be handy if you’re inexperienced.

I would normally use 12.5mm but you may have been better to use 9.5mm. That would have given you 4-5mm; although 5mm is a little on the heavy side, you could either have packed the boards out slightly or the plasterer would have made it up; you should still be OK with it though.
