Detecting studwork

I've bought one of those electronic tools for detecting studs - but it keeps going off everywhere - despite re-adjusting the sensitivity.

Do these things actually work?

Could someone recommend one that does?

Is there an alternative? (apart from tapping the surface listening for hollow sounds)

Maybe I've just got a duff unit?
