I have a load bearing wall in my house and I want to create a doorway in it. The wall is between the kitchen and a hallway and there is another wall directly above it. I pulled some of the drywall off and found that the studs are 2x6 on 18" center. There is already a 2x12 header there the bottom of which is only about 7' from the floor. I only want to remove one stud to create an opening of about 36". Will I need to put in extra support for the header and if so how much?
