OK, on my old switch I have a yellow wire in L1, a blue wire in L2 and a red wire on the opposite side to the other two. On my new dimmer switch I have 3 terminals that are marked Live, Slave and an arrow with a wavy line. Bit stumped on this, could anyone help please?

Yes, you have the wrong sort of dimmer switch.
I guess your is a Varilight, or similar?
These will not work on a two way circuit unless you have a similar dimmer at the other end of the circuit.
If you have a regular switch at the other end of the circuit you need a standard push button or rotary dimmer, like THIS
