Dimmer Switch Problem

Hi All,

I have recently replaced a ceiling light with a 200 watt (x10 20 watt halogen bulb) light.

Problem: I have also fitted a 400 watt dimmer switch, but when I tried to use it, the ceiling light and the dimmer switch started to make crackling noises. I have since re-replaced the dimmer with a standard switch which works fine.

Does anyone know why a dimmer switch would be causing this problem?
