dimmers on a two way lighting circuit

Whats the best way to install dimmers on a two way lighting circuit.
with each control being dimmable.
I have heard about master and slave units, how do they work, and can you put the dimming mechanism into a switch already purchased i.e. take out the current module and replace with master or slave.
