Dimmer switches - can I convert a master to a slave?

Hello,

I have tried the light in the other switch and it still does not work. The only thing i can think it might be is the jb i had to put along the cable between the two switches as i accidently cut it and didn't want to chisel out the wall again.

Would this cause it to keep not working.
