I've noticed some dirty marks on the wall above our (wall mounted) boiler -- should I be concerned -- could this be fumes somehow escaping from the boiler. Oddly the worst mark doesn't go straight up but at about 25 degrees off the vertical from the top of the boiler.

It is probably convected heat marks. The air warms around the boiler and rises when it hits the top of the casing it gets deflected out at an angle causing a stain with dust. Or if it's a open flued appliance turn it off and get a Corgi reg installer/service engineer to check it out for you to put your mind at rest. If any doubts turn it off get it checked.
