Changed a 27" one of these which had failed after 4 months use. I was surprised to see that a lot - like about a third, of the copper sheath had dissolved away for a good length, so you could see the coiled heater wire inside. Remaining copper was reduced thickness.
Assuming it "blew" (about 3 weeks ago) as soon as water got to the element, what would cause cause that? The local water (SW London) is middling hard, and its in a block of flats with roof tanks. Perhaps it really IS someone peeing in the cistern.
