I would've thought no more than 6' apart otherwise the chainlink will bow

In my DIY book it says "no more than 10ft apart".
If the end posts are properly braced, and the straining wires taught enough, you sholdn't get any bow.

Out of interest, how do they tighten it up, a special tool?

So I'm assuming there's no wired bond through the links, just tighten the chainlink fence instead?

the chainlink itself is very loose and unstable. the straining wire is simply run through it top, middle and bottom and then passed through a bolted screweye on the straining post. That is then tightened to give the tension to the wire and the chainlink. its then coupled to the chain link in various places with wire rings.
