I have an old Transit van (1999) which runs well but needs regular work to try and stay on top of the rust. Recently the bottom of both of the back doors have started to disintegrate a bit and I want to repair them.

The plan is to rivet on 'L' frame aluminum over the door, build up with filler and make good. I have used L frame aluminum to repair the wheel arches before and it worked well.

My worry is that the bottom of the doors are so rusted than I won't be able to get a good enough hold with the rivets and filler.

Does anyone know of anything that is like a car body glue/gripfill type product that would be better to use than filler to hold the repair together?

Anyone have any other constructive tips or ideas (apart from buy a new van!)?

second hand doors?

a proper steel repair would be easier and probably last longer if you wanted it to look good.

as above, 2nd hand doors is your best bet.
Any repair will fail after a while with the doors constantly being slammed shut

We used to use ally chequerplate on the bottom of mini doors when they went, if the doors are splitting, also put a lenght on the inside, and join with a couple of rivets. costs pennies, looks very tidy, lasts for donkeys.
