DIY GAS FAQ

I have been in the plumbing trade for 40+ years, i'm registered with IPHE, have C & G craft & advanced craft cert's in plumbing, drainage, gas & oil (although i must admit i have forgot all i learnt in oil) i have my ACS which i retook last year also have part P & part L, but i'm not registered with corgi so does this make me incompetant to do my own gas work in my own home? I suppose technically it does.

Good effort chap. Hopefully it will discourage anybody tempted to "have a go themselves." Oh, and Dr D. is busy today. There's a thread on another forum, "Is Water Systems Legal????" He's trading insults with Dick Puller on there im afraid.

No you're OK, you're COMPETENT! If the old lady's EMPLOYING you, though, then I'm not quite so sure, and if she's PAYING you, whether in washed socks or, er, other services, I think we'll have to get mod 10 on to you!
------

On the nit picky one, I suppose that if you knew so much etc that you would pass ACS IF you took it, then you'd be competent, without actually taking it. But you have to have monitored experience before you can take it......... So if that's part of the definiton of competence then no diyer is likely to be even close.

I'd love Dr D trying to do an ACS assessment , bet he wouldn't get 1 minute into it.

Spoke to my brother in-law today, something I detest doing because he's an obnoxcious, opinionated ar$$hole, but he's is also a barrister.
The issue has been keeping me awake, I now very sad.
In principal Bahco's interpretation is about the same as his, and is the probable line of argument that would be used in the event of an attempted prosecution.
He will be onto in 6 months time for all sorts of freebies, giving it the "I did assist you with a very serious matter". Lives in a place worth millions and pleads poverty. Hopefully wont need to see him until christmas. Family hey!, don't you just love em.

I doubt that you would have much problem doing gas work in your own house.

BUT you might not have the documented work experience which would probably be necessary to become CORGI registered in your own name.

Not long ago CORGI were saying they expected people to have two years employed in a registered firm before applying for their own registration. They now seem to have relaxed that!

Very good Bahco.

Two comments:

1. Possibly too much use of bold text.
2. The word "employing" is wrong.

2 - is it? That's the verb in the GSIUR. Perhaps it should go in quotes, and it should be
may be considered at "employing" you

I don't think the law has been tested on what "employ" means, but I'm told builders have been prosecuted for doing gas work, and claiming it was ok because they weren't being paid for that part of the whole job.

I take the point ChrisR, and we know that the law isn't always consistent when considering every statute, but "employment" has a strict legal definition, as per "The Employment Act", which is where I was coming from.

Notwithstanding that, it's a pedantic point that can be overlooked in the general interests of Bahco's Wiki entry being generally wonderful and a useful stake in the ground.
