Hi There,

I am working on a friends house and we are going to install heating as it has had storage heaters in.

Can someone please confirm that this is correct for a combi system?

Run a 22mm heating flow pipe from the boiler for the 1st 3 meters then branching off with 15mm pipe to flow and return through all of your radiators then after your last radiator use 22mm pipe for the last 3 meters back to the boiler.

Do the 22mm pipes need to be done in copper?

We wer hoping to do it all in plastic pipe, obviously we would get a corgi plumber to run and connect the gas pipe.

Does this seem ok???

Many Thanks Steve

No. Get a book out of the library, no-one can explain how to install heating in an internet post. That's why there are books about it.

buy a book or appoint a decent heating engineer who can design it for you...

Without seeing a plan of the property it is impossible to pipe size correctly.
Your assumption of 3m of 22mm pipe is totally wrong. Do a bit of research on heat loss calcs and pipe sizing. Oh and do it in copper.

This is all so true, but

Oh and do it in copper.

is an opinion

OP, it really is unrealistic to expect a design service on a DIY forum. Maybe someone can recommend a good book?

Corgi is dead so don't get one of them to run the gas pipe, get a Gas Safe Registered installer, and while you are at it get him to quote to do the work, you are heading for a whole heap of pain, and the end cost is likely to be significantly more when you have to get someone to fix your mistakes.

Could be an ex friend if you screw it up.

There used to be a grant of about £300 when converting an electric storage system to gas!

Might only have applied to professional installers though!

yes you can buy the boiler (probably a cheap one) yes you can buy the rad's (again probably cheap) oh and the pipe and fitting's aswell (again probably cheap).
you can fit them (if you know how to design ).

But for goodness sake there are very few gas engineers who will sign off YOUR work.

why do assume the boilers rad's and pipe are cheap?

because you are going to the hassle to avoid paying the expertise of a proper job.

I bet you have a new car every three to four years but because heating isn't a showable item why should you spend the cash on having it done right.
