DIY incident electric cable damage, please help

why not get a plan off the cables retrospectively they may be shown in the wrong place as in on the highway and not on your land:cool:

I'd look at the personal liability section of your home insurance policy. This is the sort of thing you need it for. If neccessary take it to the Insurance Ombudsman.
 
It's location will be shown on a plan held by the DNO which is open for the public to access or receive a copy of upon request prior to any work commencing.

Is that always true?

We had a power failure a couple of weeks ago and they were wandering between ours and the neighbour's garden with cable detecting gear. I now know that our electricity supply travels under two neighbours gardens before exiting on a road round the corner.
 
If the cable is installed at the correct depth with marker tape above

For a service cable tape is only mandatory on any laid after 2002, prior to that it was not required

There is also case law which says you cannot expect it to be at the currently specified depth - some cables have been installed for many years.
