We're moving some halogen spotlights which currently have a small transformer each from one room into the hall.

I have been advised by my builder that chances are once his electrician moves the lights across, he will not use the transformers and connect the spotlights directly to the mains.

Is this possible/safe/correct? I was under the impression that some spotlights MUST use transformers, and others are manufacturerd to eliminate the use of a transformer and be connected directly to the 230v mains circuit...

When purchasing lights in the past, I've had the option of buying one's for use with transformers and one's for use without...

You are quite right, some are mains powered and some are 12v therefore need a transformer. They are not interchangeable.

For my own education, how do you tell by looking at the light fitting whether it requires a transformer or not?

you cant tell by looking at the fitting itself.

you can tell by looking at the lamp connection

12v lamps have 2 pins, mains have 2 Ts (for want ove a better description) these are push and twist, so the lamp holder connections look different.

look in the stciky there is a picture

I know precisely what you mean. Mine are all 2 pin (not 'T') shaped therefore must have transformers. Thanks for the tip :).
