Leaky kitchen tap. This is what I've managed to expose of the valve so far. The rest of the metal is solid (welded). The tiny mark on the top is where the colour dot (hot / cold) is and is solid. Clearly I either need to expose more of this valve somehow or maybe I need a special tool.
Do I need a special tool to remove / replace this tap cartridge?

Looks like you need some kind of castle socket to remove it.
Possibly something like this:

Unfortunately they may be item specific so some accurate measuring will be necessary.
This one is a Toolstation item but Di Vapor are very helpful.
