What do you mean by battens? It's usual to tile from a straight edge for the first row & use tiles spacers to ensure even gaps but many experienced tilers just use "eyeball" spacers. Decent adhesive will "grab" the tile fairly quickly so there should be no question of them moving around as the adhesive dries.

Do you envisage the tiles sliding about like ducks on a pond?
When you put the tile down and move it into place, it won't move at all when you let go of it.
