I find they normally can be found when the heating is on as there is more pressure. But with any leak they can appear hot or cold.

If you are refering to radiator fittings, normally things contract when they cool & that's often when leaks appear. When heated up the metal expands and may stop a leak. Having said that a small weep may appear to stop when the pipes are hot, but in effect the water is evaporating.
