do wall tiles stick on plaster board?

I have put a bare plaster board up on the kitchen wall and the kitchen is going to be tiled. I wonder whether it is a must to have the plaster board skimmed. Can I tile on the plaster board directly? I know it's usually skimmed, would the tile fall off if I just tile on the plaster board directly?

Bare plasterboard is an excellent surface for tiling.

No need to skim, you can tile directly onto the PB.
