If a boiler is not getting used can the needle move a little and still does not mean there is a leak. If I turn heating on it goes back to where it was when first topped up but then if left off again for days goes back down ?

Can do as the pump when activated increase the pressure, though only by a sight amount.

If the needle is sropping a little when off but then when left off longer it doesnt drop anymore. Could this be a dodgy needle ?

No it would be the water pressure reducing a little, as the it loose heat. If constantly drops till it reaches 0 then you have leak, other wise it just a pressure fluctuation.
As the pump and heating water increase the pressure.
