Hello

I have a suprima 30 which had the classic lock out problem, wouldn't light and went straight to red flashing light. Or to keep you on guard, it would work for 10 minutes then lock-out.

I replaced the PCB a few months ago, and it worked fine :) Until now......

Wife heard a terrible noise "it sounded like it was going to explode", she turned off the boiler.

Now it won't light. The fan ( I think it's the fan) starts up, the sparks are clearly visable but it doesn't light. It tries a few times (unlike the old lockout problem) and then gives up.

Does this sound like a gas value or pump problem? I think someone said once that the gas won't come on unless the pump/circulator tells it to? I'm guessing a bad pump would explain the weird noise

Any help gratefully received. I am going to get a professional in, just wondered if anyone had any opinions first.

Thank you :)

If the boiler is getting as far as sparking, then to me it sounds time to get an RGI in to check/replace the gas valve.

A faulty pump should not stop it from firing, but would cause it to shut down quickly due to over heating.

If, however, you have a flow switch above the boiler, then if the pump failed the boiler should not even attempt the ignition sequence.

Thanks for the reply. The gas value was my first thought, as it seemed a simple case of there's no gas coming through and that's why it's not lighting even though there's sparks. But I'm certainly not qualified, and then others started to complicate things.

One thing I forget to mention (sorry), it that that every 24 hours the pump is supposed to come on and run to stop it ceasing. I don't think I've heard it since the boiler has broken down. Although maybe this is because the boiler is ill or something

the inlet filter on the gas valve for this boiler is very prone to blocking. i quite ofter find it choked with what olook like some sort of metal filings :? .

usually i find it after other eng's (ours and private) have changed the pcb fan aps and everything else. i personally prefer basic checks

Some earlier gas valves were likely to fail and they usually damaged the pcb as well.

As advised you need a competent gas engineer to check exactly whats failed. It could well be that the boiler just needs a service. I am sure that you have not had it serviced regularly.
