Hi,
My sister in law has recently had a new shower fitted (8.5KW) She called me to say it kept switching itself off. I checked the fuse board to find a 30 A rewireable fuse instead of a 40 A fuse. Am i within my rights to call the electrician back to finish the job properly or is it something I can do myself.
Thanks.

A 30A rewirable is not right, but it will not be the cause of the shower turning itself off.

And yes - get the dozy tw@ back to do the job properly (which may mean a new cable from the CU to the shower, and as it's got rewirable fuses which don't go above 30A will also mean a separate mini-CU for the shower, but that's no bad thing as it ought to be on an RCD anyway).

Thanks for your speedy answer. I've been back to double check and have found the shower is connected to an rcd behind the bath panel (cable is 6mm) along with a pump for the jacuzzi bath. Also the pull switch has seen better days and think this may be the cause of it cutting out. If I changed the switch should I also change the 30A fuse for a 40A plug in (wylex) if so is it as easy as it seems (just plug new one in) . Thanks again.

Do you know if the cable is installed in such a way that 40A is an acceptable rating, and that its length is such that a 40A will disconnect quickly enough?

Hi,
Cable runs about 10M approx can't see how it's installed, just comes out the floorboards under the bath.I thought an 8.5 KW shower needed an 40A fuse or is the rcd with the 30A sufficient? Should I just change the switch and not bother with the fuse.

Thanks

Leave everything alone for moment and get the 'person' who fitted the shower back to do the job properly.

I assume your Sister in Law got a receipt, Electrical Installation Certificate and building regulations complaince certificate
