Hi All

After i've removed bathroom tiles. It looks like the tiles have been fixed straight to the wall. i.e. wall not plaster skimmed. You can see the "scratches" on the wall where skimming should be.

is this ok can i just do the same (after removing old adhesive) or should i get it reskimmed. Trouble is i can't wait a week (or 4!) for the plaster to dry before retiling as only have 1 (small) bathroom.

Thanks

Harryet

You can, assuming that you're looking at a cement render or brick. If the surface is a browning or bonding type plaster then it should be skimmed before tiling.

How can you tell what type of plaster it is?? it's a slightly darker colour that normal dried plaster coloured

If it's cement render it should be rock hard. If it's quite soft and slightly powdery when rubbed, it's probably plaster.
Chances are it's render though.
Sometimes on older property you get tiles stuck directly to brickwork with cement - these are usually a nightmare to remove. If this is the case you can tile stright onto the cement.
