Hi all

I recently purchased a new gas cooker which i had installed correctly by a corgi registered fitter. the cooker was installed and is workign fine.

the day after this was installed i started having problems with my central heating. this was going off before it was supposed to. when i checked i realised the pilot light had gone out. i relit the pilot light and the heating worked fine for about an hour then the same happened. the pilot light went out. i did this about three times.

not knowing much about this area i called the fitter who installed my oven. he assured me that he didnt do anything that should make this happen and suggested i bled the radiators.
i am an engineer and not an idiot and i cant see how an airlock in the radiator would cause this. is he fobbing me off? by the way he said he would come and look at it but need to pay him for this service.

any advice would be appreciated.

cheers

matt

When he fitted the cooker he should have done a tightness test to check for any leaks in the gas pipeowrk. To do this he will have had to turn off the pilot on the boiler. When this is done then afterwords it is common place to the pilot lights to be tempramental. Get the thermocouple replaced and it should be fine.

The airlock theory could be an ouside bet, if there was air in the system then it could cause the boiler to overheat and switch off the pilot but I would say is not the cause here.

More info in the boiler make model etc would also help a diagnosis.....but try T/C first!

thanks for the quick reply. how much would i be looking at for a new thermocouple plus fitting etc?

new thermocpl depends on boiler....if a universal one will fit then parts should not be more than £5 - £10, boiler specific ones can be £30+, then time....and hour should see it done!

I do think that telling you to go and bleed the radiators was fobbing you off but knowing how some customers react I can understand why he might have done that.

Unfortunately many customers jump to the conclusion that anything that goes wrong just after someone has done a small job totally seperate from the new problem.

Its not his fault that your boiler is old and has probably not been recently serviced. You must realise that the charge for fitting the cooker does NOT include servicing your boiler!

A reasonable charge for replacing the t/c is £65 inclusive, if the pilot needs cleaning then say £20 extra and if the gas valve needs replacing then about £80 extra although thats unlikely.
