no doubt this will be shot down in flames but here goes . . .

I need to slightly alter the piping out of my gas meter - chopping off a pipe that goes under the floor to the lounge and reconnecting up to boiler and stove feeds.

So far two quotes - 130 quid, and 100 quid. I gave the 100 quid guy the go ahead, as its holding up other jobs. He didn't show.

I am not Corgi, nor am I a plumber. But with compression fittings I reckon this would take me about half an hour.

Why don't i just do it myself?

why dont i just do it myself..........

because in this country it ILLEGAL, and you know it is.

no biggie as long as your competent

you can't use compression fittings where they are not acessable ie under the floor

I thought it was illegal, but yeah, I guess I'm competant , well, in my opinion anyway.

The fittings would not be under the floor, the gas meter is sitting inconvenently on my kitchen floor and the pipework would be directly out of the meter - straight section of 22 mm to the boiler pipe with reducing T for cooker spur.

your opinion in the eyes of the law ain't worth jack mate

you either are or your not and if your guessing i would say not
just to muddy the water a bit further there is no definition in law

it is however accepted that holding ACS is proof

Nothing very hard, but it would take a few sides of A4 to tell you all the things you might have to know about to do it right. Then we might miss something out. Then you need pressure testing kit.

was thinking a bit of fairy liquid might do the trick.

i know I should be getting it done by pro, but not having much luck finding one.

then anyone can work on gas, what defines competant?

Not anyone can work on gas, but a competent person can DIY in their own home.

The biggest bone of contention that usually starts a massive argument is how do you determine that competency?

But you said you had two quotes. The £100 did not show up ( because he had second thoughts about doing it so cheaply? ).

But have you called the £130 one? I expect not because you have not mentioned him. Why not call him and get it done properly?

Even call the £100 again and see if you can get him?

There can be many reasons why he did not turn up. Jobs over running are the most likely and perhaps he is embarassed or thinks you got someone else? Call him and see.

Competency should be determined by the level of training and supervision leading to an ACS qualification.

compertent person using washing up liquid is not a compertent person, as rightly pointed by the armchair installer, so the diy'er could find themself in a court of law facing contravention of regulations, thats where the law comes in therfor the illegal bit.

How many times have we read in GI of "illegal gaswork".....

as rightly pointed by the armchair installer,
