Domestic Waste Compactors

Anybody any experience of domestic compactors. Not so much the technical specs and how they work - what I'm really interested in is whether they are practical or a bit of a gimmick? After a while of use do they start to smell and are they easily cleanable?

Any insights would be much appreciated.
