Door Closer Question

I've been reading that door closers fitted with parallel arms are less efficient than those with standard arms.

Is a door closer specifically made to be fitted with one type of arm, or can you change to a different type of arm on a closer?

I ask because I have a door with a parallel arm closer and it has never been satisfactory. Would fitting a standard arm improve it, assuming there were no other problems with the door?

Pretty much all the doors I've fitted come only with a single arm set - but they often include a couple of different mounting plates for conventional and parallel fixing (although for some you need to purchase parallel kits as an accessory). Parallels always seem a bit more of a faff to get right, that's all
